VO2 max testing for cyclists
A ramp test on the bike with breath-by-breath gas analysis and power measurement — so your zones are set in watts, from your physiology, not from a 20-minute estimate.
Testing led by Jack Braniff — MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition, SENr & CISSN registered, UKAD anti-doping advisor and author of Fuelling The Functional Athlete.
Why test
Watts are only useful if the zones behind them are real
Every structured cycling plan is written in zones — but most riders anchor those zones to an FTP estimate that can swing 20–30 watts depending on pacing, freshness and motivation. A lab VO2 max test removes the guesswork: we measure your oxygen uptake breath by breath while power rises, and locate your ventilatory thresholds directly.
You leave with zones in watts and heart rate that are anchored to your physiology, a measured aerobic ceiling to train towards, and — because the metabolic cart measures fuel use — your carbohydrate burn per hour at race intensity, which is the number your fuelling plan should be built on.
For sportive riders, crit racers, time triallists and triathletes alike, it's the difference between training around your numbers and training on them.
| Your personal zones (power & heart rate) | What it trains |
|---|---|
| Zone 1 — Recovery | Easy aerobic work, active recovery |
| Zone 2 — Endurance | Fat-burning base, the engine room |
| Zone 3 — Tempo | Sustained 'comfortably hard' efforts |
| Zone 4 — Threshold | Race pace around LT2 / FTP |
| Zone 5 — VO2 Max | Short, maximal intervals |
How it works
Your hour in the lab
Consultation
15 minutes on your riding history, typical training week, events and goals, so we tailor the ramp and the debrief.
Setup
Heart-rate monitor on, breath-analysis mask fitted, bike position adjusted, power measurement calibrated.
Ramp test
Resistance increases in steady increments from easy spinning to your maximal aerobic power — typically 10–15 minutes of riding.
Analysis
We identify your VO2 max, VT1 and VT2, map them to watts and heart rate, and calculate your fat and carbohydrate use at each stage.
Debrief & report
A sit-down with Jack to turn the data into power zones, session targets and a fuelling strategy in grams of carbs per hour. Full report included.
Who it's for
From first sportive to race season
Threshold precision
Set threshold and sweetspot targets from measured physiology, and pace long events on data instead of feel.
One engine, three sports
Your bike zones set correctly protect your run — know exactly what power you can hold and still run off the bike.
Make ERG mode honest
Structured indoor training only works if the zones are right. Anchor your smart-trainer sessions to lab numbers.
Common questions
Is this better than an FTP test?
A 20-minute FTP test estimates one number from performance on the day. A lab ramp test measures what's happening inside — your oxygen uptake, your ventilatory thresholds and your fuel use — so your zones reflect physiology, not pacing skill.
Do I use my own bike?
The test is performed on our lab ergometer with calibrated power measurement. Bring your cycling shoes and pedals if you'd like to ride your own setup — just mention it when booking.
How hard is the test?
It ramps from easy spinning to a maximal effort over roughly 10–15 minutes. It's hard at the end — that's the point — but it's over quickly and fully supervised.
What numbers do I leave with?
VO2 max, VT1 and VT2 in watts and heart rate, your personal power zones, and your fat vs carbohydrate burn (including grams of carbs per hour) across intensities.
How often should I retest?
Most cyclists retest every 3–6 months or at the start and end of a training block to confirm the thresholds have moved and re-set zones.
