When it comes to cycling performance, there are a number of areas that contribute to success. Three of the key metrics are your VO2 max, VLa max and your FTP/anaerobic threshold š«vs ā”ļøVs š
In very simple terms, Your VO2 Max represents your ability to produce energy from oxygen, whereas your VLa Max represents your anaerobic capacity (maximal lactate production from carbohydrates). Slow sustainable energy vs quick unsustainable energy š„
Your FTP will be determined by the above š”
A high VO2 max will enable you to use more oxygen - go for longer ā
A *LOW* VLA max will reduce the amount of lactate produced at given speeds - go for longer ā
šTo become a successful cyclist, you need to understand the balance of a high VO2 max and your VLA max š
Too high a VLa max, will reduce your FTP š¤Ø
Too low a VLa Max will reduce the amount of power you can produce quickly š¤Ø
This is when you need to decide your goals as an athlete.
Long distance athletes i.e. Ironman Will require a low VLa max.
Sprinters on the other hand will require a high VLa max.
When we can establish both of these markers, it is easy to see where to go with your training.......
