3 Reasons You're Not Seeing Results on Your Weight Loss Plan
The weight loss journey can be difficult for some, but it doesn't have to be. There are many reasons why weight loss is not happening. If you're struggling with weight-loss and want to know more about how metabolic testing can help, then this blog post is for you!
Weight loss can be difficult, but weight gain is often not always our fault. Weight-loss isn't just about understanding about diet and exercise; your metabolic rate plays a role in weight management too. Metabolic testing allows us to know how many calories your body burns at rest (BMR) and during activity (AMR). It also helps determine the amount of food your body needs to maintain weight and without gaining weight.
1. You're not burning as many kcals at rest as you think you are at rest
The first reason you may not be seeing results on your weight loss plan is because the number of calories being burned at rest may be lower than what was predicted from estimated formulas such as Harris-Benedict, Mifflin St Jeor, or Katch-McArdle.
Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR or also referred to as BMR) is the amount of energy you burn while at rest, which accounts for 60% of your total energy expenditure. Getting this portion correct when determining how much you need to consume is crucial.
If you are not burning less calories at rest than you think, then weight loss will be slow or not happen at all. This is the great benefit of an RMR or metabolic test as it we can see exactly how many kcals you're burning at rest without the
guesswork.
2. You're not burning as many kcals at rest as you think you are at during exercise
The second reason is because the number of calories burned during exercise may be lower than expected, even though you thought you were working hard enough to lose weight . This can be very frustrating when trying to lose weight.
The problem with devices such as FitBit and the Apple watch, they measure kcal based on heart rate making them estimations at best. In fact you should expect their estimations of your kcal burn to be off by up to 20%.
Metabolic testing can resolve this. As well as measuring kcal burn at rest, metabolic testing can calculate how many kcals you burn at different exercise intensities. By understanding how many kcals you burn during exercise AS WELL as at rest, makes it far easier to put a plan together for your weight loss goals.
The snippets below are from a clients test report and fitbit. Her FitBit had her burning around 400kcals per hour whereas in reality it was closer to 200!
N.B. Kcal burn should not be the only goal >> Rather than focusing only on the kcals burned during an exercise session, consider how many additional health benefits you'll get from weight training. Although weight training may not burn a large number of calories, it offers a slew of advantages that go beyond how many kcals you burn per hour. Weight training can help with insulin sensitivity, carbohydrate storage, bone health and injury prevention to name a few.
3. You're not being consistent with your diet and exercise regime
The third reason weight-loss isn't happening for you may be due to your inconsistency with diet and exercise . Weight gain most likely happens because of bad food choices, poor structure and or lack of activity. It may not be necessary to make dramatic changes to what you're currently doing, but incorporating certain good principles into your nutrition and exercise plan may bring about substantial changes to your body.
